A Handwritten Letter (Blog) for JOYCELYN

To Whom We Call Dayday,

Making new friends as an adult is hard. One of my favorite Aunts once told me that you want to have older best friends, and younger best friends. The reason for this would be, you bury some...and some bury you. It's not macabre, but life's reality.

So, you--are the 'youngest' forever 25ish bestie. It's your birthday and you deserve the bestest of celebration of life in any and many forms. From time well spent, conversations well discussed, analysis worth bulletpointing for, and the neverending deciphering and decoding the most complex of all-- our human desire to have connection in this modern day of a conundrum, yet you excel in every avenue of your life. Not because you have it easy, if anything, your cards were dealt with challenge, sorrow, struggle, and most of all heartache from love and grief, but as the person you are--you came through. Just as the rise of a Phoenix from the ashes, you always come through your pain glowing even better than the last. You always manage to inspire in spite of people breaking your trust. You operated from love, and from always having 'faith' that love does always work in your favor.

Watched by many, motivated a lot, but also scrutizined by most--is just the definition of how far you've come. How solid you've Boss-Babed not even in one generation. Less than 10 years, you've succeeded in being a single mom, a nurturing daughter, all the while leading a department with a side of Magna Cum Laude. You accomplished so much no one can even dream of. You've accomplished it not because it was handed to you, but you truly worked your way from the hostess desk of TGIF to the desk of the DFOM. (period)

I mention it here only to remind you that you did all that. You're not even halfway through life, and the accolades may mean something in this life, but the truest gift is your beautiful soul that we, as those whom are closest get to be blessed with. I write this, I know that it would mean a lot for me to express how grateful I am to have you as one of my closest friends, a true childhood friend, and for a time--my boss too. For one to experience a mileage of years is the true flex on my part.

It's hard making friends as an adult. It's a gift having one since childhood. But the true blessing, is having to cultivate and nurture a friendship I know I treasure when it is time for me to be entombed.

To many many more Sag-Rising Birthdays!
